SALE OF FARM ANIMALS

The farm animals at Cook College serve a multitude of purposes including production, research, teaching and outreach. Indeed, while a large number of both our (agricultural) research animals and production farm animals (e.g., pigs, sheep, goats) are in fact sold at auction, with an end point of slaughter, a significant number are also sold through normal channels of agricultural commerce to the private sector. This does not necessarily include slaughter following the sale or transfer of such animals (e.g., UMDNJ for biomedical research, farmers, 4-H projects etc.). These types of sales must be understood in the context and normality of a farm system and the parameters of agricultural commerce needed to remain economically viable. This contributes significantly to our financial stability which in turn helps to subsidize the high cost of agricultural research. Careful records are maintained on all sales. Animals will be sold through accepted channels of agriculturural commerce only. This does not include the pet trade or pet industry.

DRUG-TREATED ANIMALS

Sick animals (food animal species) treated with antibiotics will be held in accordance with applicable federal holding periods. The various holding periods for each specie and type of antibiotic will be adhered to in accordance with Federal labeling instructions.

In the case of animals treated with experimental drugs and/or hormones (eg., steroids), the holding period will comply with Federal labeling instructions. Where no labeling instructions are available, the animals will be held for a minimum of 60 days.

EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS

Agricultural animals receiving non-FDA approved drug (s) or instrumented in a way that will affect the normal appearance of the animal will not be sold for human consumption unless such sale is preapproved by the Animal Care and Facilities Committee. The holding period and the ability to sell or not sell will "ill be listed under the 'Special Conditions' section of the approval form which is supplied to the Cook/NJAES Director of Agricultural Animal Care.

RECORD KEEPING

Careful record keeping will be maintained in order to track all animals in and out of Cook College. These records are maintained through and by the Service Department of Animal Care which is directly accountable to the Office of the Cook College Dean, the University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the University Animal Care and Facilities Committee.
