ELECTIVE SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS
ORIENTATION TO ANIMAL CARE AND USE AT RUTGERS For all animal users, from Principal Investigators to technicians. The Animal Care and Facilities Committee has determined that in order to be in compliance with Federal regulations and accreditation requirements, that it is appropriate for a required education program to be implemented. The course (approximately one and a half hours) is based largely on the federal Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare's requirement of having all staff exposed to training of regulatory requirements for animal welfare with occupational and safety considerations. The actual protocol form will be tied into the presentation to provide some good practical information. Faculty, technicians, post docs, students, grad students, and others who are listed as working with animals on the protocols are required to take the course. Undergraduate students who work on special animal projects must also take the course. For your convenience the course will offered by Laboratory Animal Services at least twice a month. While an approval date will be given once the person takes the course, there will be no expiration date at this time. At this point it is a one time only session - but we want to leave it open ended just in case requirements change. This seminar is a prerequisite for all other courses listed below. 22 Workshops in 2005! 22 Workshops in 2006! 26 in 2007

Animal
Research Compliance for What:
Faculty conducting animal research must deal with more regulations, bureaucracy
and paperwork than just about any type of researcher.
Keeping up with the constantly changing requirements is a challenge.
This elective workshop is open
to any faculty member with an approved animal use protocol, but is targeted to
the busy, well-funded senior scientist
with many grants, many protocols and a large staff; and to key support people in his or her lab.
If humane animal research and compliance with regulations are to be
priorities in a busy lab, the principal investigator must provide leadership.
But that does not mean that the PI must do it all.
We will discuss how a team
approach can best meet the goals of productive, sound, and humane animal
research while complying with the bureaucratic requirements of granting
agencies, regulators and When: Workshops will be given periodically or workshops can be scheduled on request. Approximate time: 2 hours Where: Laboratory Animal Services seminar room Nelson D113, Busch Campus or as announced Advanced registration required for all seminars and workshops!
